Marshall County Voters Reject New Jail

Turnout was light for the special election in Marshall County Tuesday on the jail proposal, with 2/3 of 1,114 voters rejecting the question that would have allowed the county to proceed with up to $6.5 million in financing through a lease purchase agreement to finance the estimated $12 million project.

16% of registered voters turned out for the special election, which was prompted by a citizen petition against a resolution to approve the financing. A series of public meetings were held to highlight the need for a new jail facility, after commissioners had finalized plans for a new complex at the east side of Marysville. The final vote Tuesday at the special election was 64% voting against the measure, with 718 no and 396 yes votes. The matter now goes back to county commissioners for consideration of next steps.
